Ten Greatest Movies You Might Have Missed (A+ each)

 

 

Memento outdoes the Usual Suspects for a twisting, mind-draining plot, brilliant performances and more reasons to dissect the movie with friends than even Blade Runner (Director’s Cut, of course). Citizen Kane is reputed to be the greatest movie ever with good reason, but few people recently have seen it. Dr. Strangelove is the funniest Kubrick ever got and has amazing performances (George C. Scott, Peter Sellers [triple role]), memorable lines (‘You can’t fight here, this is the War Room’) and a timely anti-war message. The Third Man captures the decadence of pre-war Vienna, has superlative cinematography and film score and ought to be on the NAB’s must-watch list as it graphically shows the apathy of a corrupted mind and how it reacts when the fuzz closes in. The Princess Bride, is a fun kiddie romp that adults love and has often quoted lines. All about Eve is vicious and ‘a masterpiece of old-style theatre back-stabbing with a cherished, hand-picked cast (Bette Davis, wow!).’ M had a startling starring turn by Peter Lorre and dissected the criminal mind to an utterly scary and compelling effect. Speaking of compelling, 12 Angry Men is as compelling as any court-room drama but is set in the jury room and Henry Fonda is superlative. Otto P’s Anatomy of a Murder is chilling and more real than say Witness for the Prosecution with three dimensional characters and shot in a close to the bone, cinema verite style
